Can You Lose Your Job Because of the IRS?
I am the Senior Tax Advisor at Choice Tax Solutions Inc. I prepare taxes and represent taxpayers with IRS problems in New York City (as well as all U.S. states and globally for U.S. people). I have worked with non-filers and problem cases for 20 years.
Many people are worried that they may lose their job because of the IRS. Is this even possible? Yes, it is, under certain circumstances.
WAGE GARNISHMENT
Let’s say that the IRS or State Taxing Authority sends a wage garnishment request (also known as an Income Execution), where the employer has no choice but to turn over part of your income (and it can be a large part!). While you won’t automatically lose your job because of this, it does alert Payroll or Human Resources that you have a problem. And while it violates confidentiality and is downright unprofessional, people do gossip at work talk. It might even cost you a promotion or otherwise reflect badly on your work record.
FAILURE TO FILE
I had a case a number of years back, where a client who had not filed tax returns for 10+ years was asked by her new company to submit the filing dates of her tax returns. The new job hinged upon this compliance. While we quickly filed the necessary tax returns to get the taxpayer in compliance, the new employer didn’t like the fact she was delinquent in her filings and rescinded the job offer.
COMPLIANCE
There are many professions where your tax compliance will be checked. Most of these are financial positions. It’s quite understandable, as the employer thinks that if you are a non-filer or you have filed but did not pay your taxes, you are a huge risk (think embezzlement, poor decisions, etc.). If your job is to oversee other people’s compliance and you are not in compliance, what message does that send?
Many people have tax problems, and sometimes it can be circumstances beyond their control. Other times, it’s laziness, bad decision-making, etc. Clean up your tax problems with a professional so you don’t put your job in jeopardy.
